Incinerator Project Update

The proposed incinerator is far from a "done deal". However, the Region expects to complete the Environmental Assessment Study before the end of June of this year. Now is the time to urge regional councillors to move away from incineration and implement strategies for safer, more sustainable and financially prudent alternatives that move us toward Zero Waste.

We are very concerned about the outcome of the March 10th meeting of the Durham/York EA Study Steering Committee known as the Joint Waste Management Group. They voted against ambient air monitoring according to best practices elsewhere and did not make any recommendations for human health bio-monitoring in the vicinity of the incinerator. Read our March 10th media release to see how Durham Councillors voted at that meeting.

Please note that recommendations around incinerator monitoring are likely to be before Durham's Joint Works and Health Committee on March 24th and may then be on Durham Regional Council's agenda April 1st. We urge you to attend those meetings (see Durham Region meeting calendar) and/or write to all Durham regional councillors urging them to stand up and protect our health and environment.
