Durham Region residents host information night on EFW incinerator project
Concerned Durham Region residents will host an information session on the
EFW incinerator proposed by Durham and York Regions, to be built in the
GTA East. The focus is on the health effects of waste incineration and
exploring the alternatives.
Keynote speakers;
* On Health: Dr. Sean Godfrey
Chief of Pediatrics, Lakeridge Health Oshawa
* On Zero Waste: Claudia Marsales
Manager, Waste Management, Town of Markham
Residents will present an update on the Environmental Assessment study and
the alternatives.
A short movie "The Story of Stuff" by Annie Leonard will be shown.
Ajax resident Dianne Cross attended the information session in November
2008 and expressed surprise at the proposal. "I had no idea that an
incinerator was being proposed until I went to the information night", she
said. "I don't think that the majority of people in the area, have been
informed, and I will be bringing as many friends and neighbours as I can
to the next information night."
The organizers are voicing concern that the Regions may not have fully
considered the health risks and financial implications around
incineration, which is one of the most costly methods of disposing of
municipal waste.
A similar session in November 2008 drew over 100 residents from across
Durham and York Regions.
