We thank the residents of Durham and the members of municipal councils and municipal staff who attended and showed their interest in this subject of vital importance to the region, the province and, ultimately, the planet.

As you know, Durham and York Regions are trying to solve our garbage challenges with plans to build a waste incinerator in Clarington.

This Information Session will include a panel of speakers who will address the health, environmental and financial implications of incineration, as well as how we could move toward Zero Waste.

The Ontario Minister of the Environment has recently released the discussion paper "Toward A Zero Waste Future: Review Of Ontario's Waste Diversion Act, 2002". The Town of Markham is actively working to implement this vision and wishes to share their successes.

Time will be set aside for questions and comments from the audience. The goal of this evening is to provide information and to encourage community involvement.

NOW is the time to act.

The proposed incinerator is far from a "done deal". However, the Region expects to complete the Environmental Assessment Study before the end of June of this year. Now is the time to show your support for a healthier, more sustainable and financially prudent alternative: Zero Waste. The concept is getting support from the Ministry of the Environment with its recent release of the public discussion paper: Toward Zero Waste: A Review of the Waste Diversion Act.
