There will be a press conference on the steps of Clarington Town Hall in Bowmanville Monday May 11th at 10:00 a.m.

Please see the Media Advisory below. CUPE Ontario is working with local groups to stop the incineration project so that Durham could move towards safer, less financially risky and more sustainable materials/waste management solutions.

It is very important that people who have flexible schedules attend the press conference at 10:00 a.m.

Start: 7:00 pm
End: 11:00 pm

Mayor Abernethy placed a notice of motion on Clarington Council's agenda for Monday May 11 to rescind Clarington's decision to be "unwilling host" to the Durham incinerator and to accept the Host Community Agreement (HCA). The HCA is a contract that sets out what Clarington gets in return for hosting the incinerator for the next 25 to 30 years.

Come out to this meeting to show that the health of our community must not be compromised for pavement and sewer pipes.

Clarington Council did not decide anything on the Host Community Agreement (HCA) at its Monday May 11 meeting. Instead, administrator Frank Wu delivered an update to his report on the negotiations at 7pm, just as council was starting their meeting. The pressure is on for Clarington to reverse its stance as "unwilling host community", as this would remove a significant obstacle to approval of the incinerator. The HCA is a contract that sets out what Clarington gets in return for hosting the incinerator for the next 25 to 30 years.

Local councillors objected to this "ambush" and postponed the decision to a later meeting. Unfortunately, it was scheduled during the daytime when it's harder for people to make the time to attend. If you are able to take time during the day, come out to this meeting to show that the health of our community must not be compromised for pavement and sewer pipes.
