ZERO WASTE AND INCINERATION LINKS

Prevent Cancer Now Incineration Toolkit
Stop Incineration! Incinerators emit hundreds of pollutants, including carcinogens, into our air, land and water every day. Health Canada says the biggest source of dioxins and furans come from the burning of municipal and medical waste. Prevent Cancer Now provides an incineration toolkit and sign-on statement urging the phase-out and bans on future proposals.

CAW Durham Regional Environment Council
CAW DREC hosted two incineration and Zero Waste information forums in May 2007 and January 2008. On the CAW DREC incineration information page, you can read a position statement by former CAW president Buzz Hargrove and a December 2007 resolution against incineration that was eventually passed by CAW Council.

DURHAM ELECTION 2010
Making the Environment the #1 issue in the 2010 municipal elections. Incumbents and challengers were asked to respond to a questionnaire. Some have, and you can read their responses. Others have not answered yet and you are invited to encourage them to let us know how they would treat environmental issues if elected, or re-elected.

DURHAM ENVIRONMENT WATCH

SPREAD THE WORD — GET ORGANICS OUT OF THE GARBAGE!
It is VERY important to get organics out of our garbage, because ORGANICS ARE NOT GARBAGE! You see, when buried in a landfill, those lettuce heads, grass clippings and paper boxes don’t just break down as they would in nature or in a compost pile. They decompose anaerobically, (without oxygen), and in the process become the number one source of human-caused methane and a major player in climate change. If on the other hand, we burn organics, they are gone forever, and cannot be used to replenish our soils. The answer is this: we need organics to be composted, which will prevent potent methane emissions AND build healthier soils. Help make sure everyone knows this in Durham Region - Spread the word!

THE WEEE MAN
The Weee Man is made from the amount of waste electrical and electronic products that an average UK citizen (that's US TOO) will throw away in OUR lifetimes, if WE carry on disposing of products at the current rate. Currently most of these products go straight into landfill. From January 2006 UK manufactures & retailers will be responsible for recycling this waste under new EU legislation called the WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Directive. Support the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's review of the Waste Diversion Act that aims to introduce similar producer responsibility measures in Ontario.
